In the first edition of the PPE practice guidelines published by the BAcC/RCHM, eye protection for practitioners was required only ‘when in proximity of and when treating the ‘high risk zone’ of a patient’s face and head.’ Due to many practitioners now requesting greater clarification on the requirement to wear personal protective equipment, the BAcC/RCHM recently issued new guidelines to clarify the legislation regarding PPE.
The guidelines stated:
‘It is now a requirement in all four nations of the UK that practitioners wear a type IIR fluid-resistant surgical mask (FRSM) in addition to eye protection (either a visor or goggles) at all times when under two metres away from the patient.’
When clinics were able to re-open, strict PPE regulations were implemented to limit the acquisition and transmission of COVID-19 to protect both practitioners, the patients they care for and the wider community. Protecting health professionals not only limits the spread of disease, but also ensures that there are adequate numbers of staff readily available to cope with the inevitable increasing demands for healthcare and practitioner services in the coming months.
