Coronavirus: Updated Formula for Air Purifying Herb Bags

We had an overwhelming response to our initial recommended recipe of Air Purifying Herb Bags for the prevention of Coronavirus infection. After another arduous month of fighting the COVID-19, the Chinese health authorities have learnt more about the virus and revised their recommended formula.

Chinese herbs have been used for thousands of years to treat many health problems including bacterial and viral infections. However, Chinese herbal medicine is sometimes best served as a preventative measure and we have recommended immune boosting herbal formulas and using moxibustion to detoxify the air in our homes and clinics.

Similarly to pot pourri, anti-bacterial and anti-viral dried herbs can be put into small cloth bags and placed around your home. The fragrant essential oils from the herbs may evaporate into the air and cleanse your home environment. These herb bags are very easy to make and the herbs are available from our online shop, subject to availability as demand is very high at this time.

The Chinese health authorities recognised that viruses such as COVID-19 arise in cold-damp seasons, however the previously recommended formula had cooling herbs such as Bo He and Ai Ye which are more suited to the Spring season. We have now updated the formula to include more warming herbs, which not only cleanse the air but also to boost our internal immune systems. The Chinese health authorities recommended that this is one of the most effective preventative measures that we can do in our own homes.

This formula is for one 28g herb bag. We recommend making 5-10 bags to cover two rooms or one large room. We recommend that you make multiple bags to give to your friends and family. You can also sell these to patients in your clinic. You can purchase ready-made bags from our online shop.

Method

  1. Multiply the formula according to the number of herb bags you wish to make. The recipe above makes one bag.
  2. Combine the herbs in a bowl. For the best results, you can grind the herbs using a pestle and mortar to maximise surface area – this will allow essential oils to evaporate more effectively.
  3. Mix evenly and separate the ground herbs into 10 cloth or muslin bags.
  4. Place in various areas of your home to purify the air.

How to use:

  1. Place the bags around your home.
  2. The fragrant essential oils will evaporate into the air. Sniffing a bag occasionally will allow you to inhale the essential oils and this may help to boost your immune system. As the Coronavirus affects the respiratory system, inhaling the bags for its anti-viral properties may help to ward off any potential infections.
  3. After 2 weeks, we recommend that you burn the bags in a steel pot away from flammable objects. As the herbs burn, they will release more essential oils into the air.
  4. Replace the bags with fresh ones every 2 weeks.

As we have an in-house dispensary, we are also producing Air Purifying Herb Bags as packs of 10 for sale. Due to unprecedented demand and the time needed to produce these, we are limiting customers to one pack each. At this trying time, we believe that it is important to share resources to allow more people to benefit from herbal medicine, so we have imposed maximum order limits to various herbal products.

We hope that this information has been helpful. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions about this formula. We encourage practitioners to share this formula to others so that more people are aware of the range of preventative measures that can be put in place.
