A new Coronavirus has broken out in China, infecting more than 4,000 people and killing 106 – with the death toll set to rise. The disease, which causes pneumonia-like symptoms, has forced Beijing to quarantine 18 major cities, locking down more than 56 million people.
What is Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause illnesses ranging from a cold to more severe diseases. Typically, symptoms include fever, fatigue, sore throat and dry cough, and may develop into breathing difficulties.
In 2003, the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) broke out in China. SARS is an airborne virus, which is also spread in a similar way to cold and flu and is a form of Coronavirus. It infected over 8,000 people which resulted in nearly 800 deaths in 17 countries over an 8 month period.
These viruses are usually transmitted between animals and people. The source of the coronavirus is believed to be a seafood market in the city of Wuhan, home to over 11 million people.
Whilst most people affected are in China, a small number of cases have also been confirmed in the United States, France, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Macau, Japan and the Philippines. 14 people are currently being tested in the UK.
The Coronavirus causes severe acute respiratory infection and there is no specific cure or vaccine. If you or your patient have recently travelled to China, have been in contact with someone who has, has similar symptoms or want to try to prevent catching the virus, we have something that may help.
